In his 2026 budget proposal, the President proposed funding cuts to most federal research programs, amounting to a 22% decrease from Fiscal Year 2025. These proposed cuts would be catastrophic to scientific and medical research. They would be devastating to the crucial research programs conducted by faculty at OSU and other research institutions, disrupting the STEM education that produces the skilled workforce we need to face future challenges, and ultimately “setting back advancements in medicine, and all other kinds of fields, potentially for decades.” There is still time to avert this crisis. The President’s budget request is not final and must be passed by Congress, with a budget deadline of October 1st. We have already seen that public pressure and outreach to elected officials make a difference. Earlier this month, House Republicans added their support to maintaining the NIH budget, demonstrating that public advocacy can build bipartisan support for science.

Please send a letter to our Ohio elected officials today to urge them to support research funding in next year’s budget and to address other threats to higher education that would affect many constituent communities. We have supplied a draft to make this an easy task. If you have some extra time, we encourage you to modify the template to make it more personal.
