Recent articles published by the Chronicle of Higher Education, the Lantern, Columbus NBC affiliate Channel 4, and the Columbus Dispatch have brought to light Dr. Angela Bryant’s efforts to be reinstated as a tenured faculty member at Ohio State.
AAUP-Ohio State continues to stand in strong support of Dr. Bryant's reinstatement as a tenured faculty member. The university administration inappropriately accepted a brief resignation email sent while Dr. Bryant was experiencing a mental health crisis, and her efforts to be reinstated have been denied. Throughout, AAUP-Ohio State has been working with Dr. Bryant, together with appropriate bodies in the University Senate. We agree with the statements supporting Dr. Bryant’s case from the Senate’s Committee on Academic Freedom and Responsibility (CAFR) and the Senate’s Hearing Committee of the University Senate. To accept an informal resignation email, written under personal duress, is a violation of due process and faculty rights. It flies in the face of the culture of caring and concern for mental health that we have been promoting and practicing at the university.
